Easton's Legacy Toy Drive

Each September we lead a memorial toy drive to benefit the children of PCH. This began almost 7 years ago when Kursty and I lost our little boy Easton to his battle with primitive neuroectodermal tumors (pnet, pronounced peanut). Our yearly memorial toy drive, occurring in conjunction with his birthday, is our way to celebrate his life and remember him. Our campaign initially began small with close friends and family participating. However, over the past few years it has grown to include many other groups and organizations in our community.

Once again we have joined up with Derrick and Rochelle Spitzer, the owners of CrossFit Incite to host a memorial fitness event in conjunction with the toy drive. We invite the community and neighboring CrossFit gyms across the Phoenix valley to join us for our workout event and competition. For admission into the event we ask for the donation of a new unopened toy, which will be given to a cancer patient at PCH.

WOW! What an amazing day yesterday was, look at what we accomplished, I cannot wait to see the smiles these will bring! Thank you so much to all those who have helped us make this into what it has become, a huge thank you to Derrick Spitzer and Rochelle Seever Spitzerfor helping us go even bigger for the third year in a row! Thank you all the other local boxes that gathered toys, brought out equipment, came and participated and helped spread the word about our event and child hood cancer awareness! Thank you to all of your sweet children who came out and got involved, thank you to our vendors our families and our friends who we consider to be our family! Especially our incite family we love you all so much! Not only did we collect all these wonderful toys to be donated in my sweet Easton's memory but we are estimating (will have the final total tomorrow evening) that we have raised at least $3500 in funds to be donated to the families of the PCH patients. You all are amazing!Check out the pics from Easton's event, you will have to copy and paste the following link:

ONLY ONE MORE DAY!!!
We have a number of updates/reminders for everyone about the various events tomorrow.

THE WOD
The first heat is scheduled to begin tomorrow morning at 8:00 AM.  If you want to participate in this heat please arrive by 7:45.  We will run heats every 30 minutes which should allow plenty of time for announcements/door prizes, group led stretching, and the 13 minute workout.  We will try to cap each heat at about 30 participants.  Up to 5 of spots per heat will be reserved for the official competitors.  For participation in the WOD we ask for the donation of a new unopened toy, or $10 to go to the children at PCH.  In addition to participation in the WOD, you will receive a door prize ticket.

The Official Competition
We were a little worried at first, but have received lots of recent interest and sign-ups for the official competition.  As of right now we have about 15-20 competitors, but will continue to allow people to sign up for the official competition through the event.  Remember, the cost to participate in the competition is $35.  This entry fee will take the place of your toy or $10 donation for the general event.  It will also include an official Easton’s Legacy WOD t-shirt IF AVAILABLE.  Because we had to have the shirt order in several weeks ago, we tried to estimate how many extra we would need for competitors and for general sales at the event.  Unfortunately, we are already out of women’s size small and are running short on a couple of other sizes.  We are working to see what it would take to do another t-shirt order for those of you who want one and are okay receiving it in a couple of weeks.  Competitors will also receive a can of Kill Cliff and Kill Cliff cozy in addition to the other samples available to everyone.  The winning guy and gal will each receive the following:
-4 pack of Fit Aid
-4 pack of Kill Cliff
-1 Cellucor t-shirt
-2 lbs Cellucor Protein Powder
-1 Certificate good for 1 Rx Smart Gear jump rope
-1 Certificate good for a pair of natural grips
-1 Smart Shaker bottle
-10 servings of Cellucor Alpha Amino

Samples and Water
There will be plenty of cold bottled water for everyone who comes out tomorrow.  You do not need to participate in the WOD and there is no charge.  Everyone who comes will also receive a Perfect Bar and a sample of Cellucor Alpha Amino while supplies last. We ask that each person be considerate and only take one.  Alpha Amino may not be suitable for your children, but they are welcome to have a Perfect Bar.

Day Care and Children
The day care will be open.  You are welcome to drop your children off during your heat.  However, we ask that children only be in the daycare during your heat so that the workers are not overwhelmed with a huge number of children.  Also, please keep your children with you at all times.  We do not want any little ones getting trampled during a workout.  Also, please keep your children off of all gym equipment!  It is heavy, dangerous, and expensive.   The Spitzers have been AMAZING about partnering with us for this event each year and letting us use their box.  Please make sure your children are respectful of the equipment and facilities.

Children’s WOD
We have designated the 10:00 AM heat to be for all children 5 years of age and up.  We will have trained coaches and adults on hand to assist them through the same WOD that the adults are doing.  We will be holding a special door prize drawing for the children and have a few goodies for them as well.

The Online Auction
Our online auction began on September 1st and will conclude at 6:00 PM tomorrow evening.  Any bids time stamped 6:01 PM or later will not be accepted.  Please contact us within 24 hours of the close of the auction to arrange for item pickup and payment.  We have had a number of amazing prizes donated and a number of equally amazing bids.  Please check out the auction page at the link below for additional details.

Raffles
We have MANY amazing items to be raffled off tomorrow at the event.  Some of the items include sports memorabilia, workout clothing, supplements, food items, various gift certificates, and just about everything else you could imagine.  Items will be on display at the event tomorrow in some format.  Raffle tickets are $2 each or 3 for $5.  All drawings will take place shortly after the final heat.  You need not be present at the time of the drawing to win.  Tickets can be bought at the event or you can contact Kursty or I to purchase tickets via PayPal.  We will be happy to enter them into the raffles of your choice.  We hope to have a complete list of raffle prizes posted later today.

Door Prizes
All participants in the WOD, official competition, and volunteers of the event will receive a ticket for our door prize drawings.  We have many door prizes that will be given out throughout the event tomorrow.  They include clothing, supplements, gift certificates, etc.  You must be present at the time your ticket is drawn to win, come early for the best chances at door prizes.

Waffle Crush
Waffle Crush will be at the event from 8:00-12:00 selling amazing waffles.  Come work out and then refuel! A portion of their sales will be going to the Easton’s Legacy toy fund.  We will have a shaded area with tables and chairs just outside of the box (gym) for you to relax and enjoy!

I’m sure I’m forgetting something so stay tuned for additional posts.

overwhelmed with emotions!

Wow what a whirlwind this week has been. I feel like I have been on the phone constantly trying to get raffle prize donations from every local business I can think of! Not to mention that I put a post on face book about it and the response was unbelievable,I have had so many generous people offer services and certificates and other great prizes for Easton's event! I have reflected many times this week on the very first Easton's Legacy event that we did 6 1/2 years ago, I think I may have taken 20-30 toys down to the hospital that year. I have always had hopes of making the toy drive bigger and better each year and to see it happening is incredible, to see the pure kindness and generosity of so many is literally breathtaking. I cannot thank everyone enough for their kindness!!! Once again if you are interested in donating product or services for Easton's event please get in touch with me and let me know.
This week one of the big tasks I set out to accomplish was shirts, that's right for the first time since Easton's Legacy started we are going to have shirts to commemorate it! I don't think it is possible for anyone to understand how extremely excited I am about this! Sean and I went to some of our family, friends and fellow crossfitters and think we have come up with an amazing design. It still has to get the final approval from the hospital because it will be using the PCH logo but I think we followed the rules so we should be good! This will be one of the ways we hope to raise funds for the families of PCH. I will let everyone know once we get a copy of the shirts and they have been approved, then we will start a pre-order for them :)

Joining up with Phoenix Children's Hospital Foundation

We are super excited to get started on this years toy drive. This year we have the opportunity to do Easton's toy drive as an "official" event for Phoenix Children's Hospital Foundation. Easton's Legacy Toy Drive will be held this year on Saturday, September 20th 2014. We will continue to do our memorial workout, with a new unopened toy in exchange for participation. This year we are also exploring other ideas such as raffles, competitions, etc. in order to earn monetary donations.  One hundred percent of the donations will be used to provide for the needs of the PCH families in the way of grocery and fuel gift cards. If you or your organization have the the capacity and are interested in donating any items that could be used as samples, raffle prizes, demos, etc., we would be very grateful.  We can provide you with the Phoenix Children's Hospital Tax Id number to assist with your donation.  I will be posting regularly from now until the event so that everyone stays updated. Thank you for your continued support by helping to celebrate our sweet boy through bringing smiles to the sweet little faces at PCH.

Details!!!

There is only about one week left until the toy drive.  So, I thought I might iron out a few of the details. For those of you who came last year the location has changed.  We have moved into a bigger space in the same complex, just a little further down. We are going to start at 9:00 AM and will go until noon, or until everyone who wants to complete the WOD (Workout Of the Day) has gotten a chance to do so.  Please make sure you come in the front entrance so that you have a chance to sign in. We are expecting a larger crowd than last year, so we will be having participants sign up for heats to make sure there is space available for everyone.  Heats will be running every 30 minutes and there will be a warm up before each .  There will be daycare provided.  However, we ask that you please try to limit the number of small children brought to the gym as we are concerned that the number of children may be overwhelming for the size of the day care room and those watching them. Many have asked me what type of toys to bring. The most important thing to keep in mind is that these children have very compromised immune systems.  So please make sure the items are all new, otherwise the hospital cannot accept them.  The hospital accommodates children ages 0-18 years of age so they will happily accept anything! Once again a huge heartfelt thank you to Coach Derrick Spitzer and his wife Rochelle owners of Crossfit Incite for hosting the event, and a huge thank you in advance to all those planning on attending to help us throw our sweet angel an amazing birthday party!

picture overload

Easton was born September 23, 2006 he was three weeks early and weighed a whopping 6lbs 15 ounces, he was 21 inches long.

This is a picture of his blessing day all three boys of mine have worn this same blessing outfit!

I got a little camera happy one day at the park, Easton was all smiles in his stroller while Daddy and big brother Draysen were flying a kite.

Easton loved hanging out with Daddy and Draysen, he also loved playing in the bath
Out of all the pictures we have of Easton this is the only one we have of he crying and the reason I took it was because he was always such a happy baby and NEVER cried so this was definately a candid!
This picture was taken one month before Easton was diagnosed with brain cancer.

He was very clever and climbed onto and into everything!!

This was Easton's first birthday only a few weeks before he was hospitalized.

This is a picture of him shortly after being hospitalized, he loved to cuddle with the soft toys people would bring him  (this is one of the major reason's why we do the toy drive)

Easton's wod!

We are going to be doing the same workout that we did last year!!! The workout is a 20 minute AMRAP which means as many rounds/reps as possible within 20minutes. The workout consists of a 200 meter run, 13 wall balls, 13 burpees, & 13 pullups. Easton was here with us on earth for 13 months so the 13 in each of the different exercises represents his time with us. workouts will start at 9am and will run in different heats every 30 minutes until 12 or until everyone has participated that wants to:) Again if you want to come by and drop off toys but do not want to workout that is 100% ok also if you have never participated in a crossfit workout don't let the workout intimidate you we have amazing coaches that will be there helping to scale the workout appropriately for those who do wish to participate. If you have any questions feel free to contact me klhatch@cox.net

My Little Fighter!

With less than four weeks until the toy drive I decided I better start sharing some stories and pictures of my amazing little Easton! This Is perhaps one of my most favorite pictures of me and My little Easton! He was such a mommas boy and could melt my heart quicker than anything. The bond him and I shared is truly something I will forever treasure. For those who haven't read the previous posts on this blog Easton was diagnosed  with Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumor Also known as P.N.E.T. Its a form of brain cancer found in children. From the time we found out about/began treatment of his cancer to the time we buried our sweet boy was only a 3 week whirlwind. As we began to learn and understand his condition we learned it is actually a birth defect that had been with him since conception. As a mom when I first heard this news I remember being astonished that Easton had been able to deal with the pain and discomfort this must have caused him for as long as he did especially since he'd shown absolutely no signs of anything being wrong with him until about 24 hours before he was diagnosed. He was such a happy baby constantly smiling and cooing and completely on track developmently. I remember being in the hospital with him imparticular one time while the nurse was drawing more blood and having to pock and prod him yet again, my smiley happy baby simply leaned over and bit her, his way of saying I've had enough! I remember thinking I was silly for the sense of pride that beamed within me at that moment as I smirk and thought to myself that's my boy:) It was just so out of character for him to do something like that and I felt like he was telling all of us I won't go down without a fight! Sadly his fight was short lived, but he did fight a good fight and I am honored I get to call him my son!

2013 fliers!!!

Yay!! The fliers are done for this years toy drive and I can start handing them out! They are pretty much the same as last year except for the date and time being adjusted Never the less I am 100% stoked! I am so excited for this years toy drive! Once again I just want to reiterate you do not have to be an existing crossfit member to participate, anyone who brings a new toy is welcome to participate and If you don't want to or can't participate in the workout you are still more than welcome to donate toys :) A big huge thank you to those of you who have already expressed a desire to help out, and of course to Derrick & Rochelle Spitzer as well for once again letting us utilize the gym for the toy drive.
